Do gentlemen really prefer blondes? Britain’s daters reveal all

Match data reveals the qualities that make up an ideal date

·         Men say their ideal date is a brunette doctor with strategically-placed tattoos

·         Females are after a dark-haired, blue-eyed male with a dad bod

·         Dog-owning, swimming and sensible haircuts also among the list of most desirable features daters look for in a partner

Ever wondered what Britain’s ideal man and woman really look like? Wonder no more.  The original dating service, match, has analysed the preferences of all of its UK members to build a picture of the ideal date – and it’s not petite blondes and toned muscle men!

match analysed the preferences of all members in the UK to build a composite picture of the UK’s most ‘dateable’ man and woman. British men’s ideal woman is, in fact, a brunette doctor with well-placed tattoos and a penchant for swimming in her spare time. Females, however, prefer a smart and sensible executive with a soft spot for a pet pooch.

The data shows that the old adage about gentlemen preferring blondes is a myth, as match’s male members were more likely to opt for a long-haired brunette with blue eyes. The belly button piercing is now well and truly a thing of the past, with today’s men admitting they have hankering for a strategically-placed tattoo instead. And when it comes to the day job, Britain’s males rate women in the medical profession – doctors and vets were rated equally highly.

Females opted for the rare but sought-after combination of dark brown hair and blue eyes, but wouldn’t countenance the idea of a tattoo or body piercing. And the ‘dad bod’ is still trending for British ladies as they opt away from the toned torso and instead state their preference for an ‘average’ physique. The ideal man is an executive or manager earning a good wage with a short and sensible haircut.

The sexes differed wildly in what they saw as an ideal salary in a partner. Females were most likely to look for a man earning between £50,000 and £100,000. However, males split into two clear camps: those looking for a partner earning less than £25,000 per year or over £250,000.

Finally when it comes to pets and the battle of cats and dogs, the latter is the clear winner with both males and females stating their potential date must be a pooch lover.

Kate Taylor, match relationship expert comments: “The data reveals some interesting insights into the Brit’s ideal date. Women are clearly fed up with the current male obsession of posting torso shots, preferring to instead relax with a more realistically well-fed partner who won’t spend every evening in the gym. Meanwhile men seem to be going against the grain and looking for a wealthy mate which, whatever the reason for this may be. Whatever takes your fancy, with more than 70 per cent of match members using the mobile app, your ideal date available at your fingertips.”

Notes to editors:

To conduct the study, match analysed data from all of its current UK members.
