  To mark its 20th anniversary, match.com today launched a search for one lucky single to help shape the future of dating in the UK.

To celebrate twenty years of creating more dates and relationships than any other dating site, match is offering a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one single Brit to travel and experience dating around the globe – and get paid for doing it! match’s chosen ‘Date Explorer’ will jet off on an all-expenses-paid, around-the-world trip to gather dating tips and expertise from five foreign cultures, bringing back with them the secrets that will make Britain a nation of better daters

The search has been launched after research from match found that Brits need to improve their dating game and still have something to learn from their foreign counterparts. Almost half (49 per cent) of British singles think that dating should be more fun, while just 26 per cent think we Brits are good daters compared to other nationalities.

More than 40% of those quizzed believed Britain is stuck in a dating rut and could do more to spice up their dating lives. Although 52 per cent of those quizzed said they would be open to more adventurous pursuits, more than 80% of Britain’s dates stick to a very tried-and-tested formula, comprising either a drink in a bar (32 per cent), a meal (29 per cent) or a coffee (21 per cent). Asking someone out on a date also seems to be an issue for many Brits, with 42 per cent of women and a fifth (20 per cent) of men saying they would never do so!

To help Britons date better, match’s Date Explorer will be tasked simply with going on dates and gathering dating advice from five foreign cities known for their vibrant and varied dating scenes: New York, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Paris and Stockholm. The lucky candidate simply needs to be single, outgoing, have a passion for travel and an insatiable appetite for meeting new people. From salsa dancing to saunas, café culture to cocktail bars, the Date Explorer will find out what makes daters around the world tick and then bring their pearls of wisdom back to the UK.

During June and July of this year, the winning candidate will spend six weeks on the road sampling the dating delights of some of the world’s greatest cities, before reporting back their findings upon their return to Britain.

Some of the key issues which the Date Explorer will be tasked with solving include:

  • The best way to ask someone out? – with just under a third of singles (32 per cent) saying they’d never ask someone out, the Date Explorer will make it their mission to find out the best tactics for asking someone out
  • Girls (and boys) just want to have fun – Almost half (49 per cent) say they want their dates to be more fun, while 46 per cent want more excitement, therefore the Date Explorer will report back on the best and most interesting settings for a first date
  • Exuding confidence – according to the research, Brits think the quality they lack the most is confidence (47 per cent), meaning the winning applicant will be required to find out the best tips and tricks to ooze confidence and win over a date
  • The charm offensive – for some people the thought of an awkward silence on a date can be a big worry, so much so that 56 per cent of Brits prepare talking points ahead of time. Following their travels, the Date Explorer will bring back a host of talking points to keep dates interested
  • Making a polite exit – on the rare occasion that they end up on a really bad date, half of singles (50 per cent) say they wouldn’t ever cut it short as they feel too rude. This can be one of the biggest worries when on a date, so the explorer will be finding out how other nations do it and the most polite ways to do so
